Readers are Leaders! Keep Reading!

Ava as BrianaHey Briana Buddies,

As I continue my journey on encouraging kids to read, I think about the one month on the calendar (March) that literacy is aggressively promoted. Schools nation wide dress up like the famous book character, Dr. Suess in order to support reading! Although I am happy to see any kind of push in order to encourage our kids to become excited about reading, I often question, why it’s only for one month out of the year?

I don’t mean to be a Debbie downer but okay I will…According to the Huffington Post and Elementary School Literacy Rate Statistics, The US Literacy Rate has not changed in 10 years. 70% of children who are not proficient readers by the 3rd grade will not catch up. Translation…a generation of underachievers.

Do I really need to break down the importance of taking time out for your children in order to read out loud to them and having conversations about current events? To some yes. I am an author because it is my personal commitment to kids to bring excitement back into reading and writing. Readers are leaders! They are thinkers, dreamers and go getters!

Parents reading starts at home. Do not depend on the school systems do it all for you. Remember…A child educated only at school is an uneducated child.

I have captured a picture of my niece, Ava. She is an avid reader and chose to be my story book character, Briana for reading day. You go Ava!

Dream Big and Keep Reading…

Signing off….
